Dr. Adcock Wins Statewide Hospital Hero Award

December 16, 2009

ATLANTA – Colquitt Regional Medical Center Medical Director D.W. Adcock, M.D., was awarded the prestigious Georgia Hospital Heroes Award at the Georgia Hospital Association’s (GHA) annual Hospital Heroes Awards luncheon Dec. 14 in Atlanta. Dr. Adcock, who was one of only 10 individuals statewide to receive the award, was recognized for his leadership, clinical expertise, and generosity to the Moultrie community.

In the mid-1970s, Dr. Adcock helped bring quality orthopedic access and care to Moultrie residents when he established Colquitt Regional’s first orthopedic medicine practice. He is also known in the community for his generosity and has volunteered much of his time and money to many civic projects. Quite often, his financial gifts are donated anonymously. For a number of years, he has donated his salary as medical director to the Colquitt Regional Medical Foundation.

Recently, Dr. Adcock completed a mission trip to Central America where he helped treat a young man from Honduras whose leg required amputation because of injuries and a surgical procedure that had not been performed correctly. Dr. Adcock flew the patient to Moultrie, where his surgery was successfully performed the day before the patient’s 21st birthday.

Dr. Adcock, knowing the young man would be struggling emotionally with the loss of his leg, arranged a birthday party for him and invited another patient to attend – a young lady whose leg he had had to amputate years earlier. She demonstrated how she enjoys complete mobility and a normal lifestyle.

“Dr. Adcock has devoted over 30 years to meeting the health care needs of the citizens of Moultrie,” said Joseph Parker, president of GHA. “His generosity is unmatched and he continually gives of his time and clinical skills. He has made a difference in countless lives and is a deserving recipient of this award.”

GHA’s Hospital Heroes Awards are presented every year to 10 individuals who display outstanding service to the health care field; in addition, one individual is presented with a Lifetime Achievement award, signifying at least 30 years of service.
