CRMC Sending $8,000 To Haiti

Colquitt Regional Medical Center collected $8,000 which is being sent to aide the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

The contributions given by hundreds of hospital employees, physicians and volunteers were matched by Colquitt Regional, and those contributions, along with a $1,000 donation from the Moultrie Lions Club, are being donated through USAID/Haiti.

Initially, Colquitt Regional’s plan was to send medical supplies along with the cash donations, but logistical issues in Haiti made the shipment of supplies impractical, according the Melanie Doppenberg, CRMC’s director of material management.

“We had hoped to send medical/surgical supplies and equipment, but all organizations have stopped accepting these donations due to logistics,” Doppenberg said. “There is a backlog in all the warehouses because they cannot get the supplies unloaded and distributed properly in Haiti.

“Shipment of supplies by air have been arriving with no one at the airport to accept them.  When the groups do come to claim them, the supplies are gone.  Red Cross and USAID both stopped accepting supplies last week. They were informed that all groups on the ground in Haiti are at this moment meeting to discuss how to get their arms around this big logistical nightmare.”

USAID/Haiti has worked with the government of Haiti and other donors to identify priority needs that could be met with United States assistance. USAID Mission Director Beth Cypser says their program will reach thousands of disaster-affected Haitians by restoring and repairing public services, providing assistance to regain lost livelihoods and assets, and ensuring the most vulnerable families have essential social support.
