Hats for Children With Cancer Just Keep On Coming

There are hats, hats and more hats and they just keep on coming.

When Colquitt County Emergency Medical Services joined with other Region 8 EMS units in a project to collect hats for children with cancer, nobody knew just how many hats could be found, but Colquitt Regional anesthesia technician BJ Cooper had an idea.

What if professional sports organizations were contacted and asked for hats? Would they give? Cooper contacted sports organizations and the answer came quickly as hats began to arrive.

There are hats from the New York Jets, Washington Red Skins, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburg Steelers, Atlanta Braves and others. The hats also include New Orleans Saints Super Bowl hats and New York Mets caps autographed by former second baseman Willie Randolph.

The Colquitt County EMS drive didn’t limit itself to just professional sports and hats also have been collected from the Colquitt County Junior High baseball team and departments from throughout the hospital.

So far, about 70 professional sports hats have arrived and they are still coming. EMS Director Amy Williams said that due to the response from the community and the employees of Colquitt Regional, the local EMS has collected a total of about 200 hats and all of them will be sent to Children’s Hospital in Atlanta. Many of the team hats were given by Steiner’s Sports, a sports retail store, and NFL Rush, a popular sports retailer and website.
