CRMC Nurse Achieves Dual Certification
Beckie Nowland, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, a nurse in Colquitt Regional Medical Center’s emergency department, has become the ER’s first certified pediatric emergency nurse.
Nowland, who was a finalist in Colquitt Regional’s Nurse of the Year competition this year, achieved the certification by passing a very difficult exam. Certification is an objective, measurable way of determining a nurse's competency that attests to the achievement of specialty knowledge beyond basic nursing preparation.
“Seeking national certification in nursing does two things,” according to Dena Zinker, director of CRMC’s emergency department. “It speaks to the nurse’s commitment to the profession of nursing and to their continued learning. To the patient, it says that the nurse has actively worked to improve their knowledge base in order to provide the highest quality care to the population of patients they serve.”
Nowland now has dual certification, having previously been certified in emergency nursing.
“Both of these exams are extremely difficult,” Zinker said. “They both require many hours of dedicated study.”
