Christmas Display Raises $1,100 for Hospice

What started 18 years ago as a few simple Christmas decorations in Barbara May’s front yard has now become a successful fundraiser for Hospice.

The elaborate display on Annie McGee Road, which includes thousands of lights, a manger scene, a train and other holiday decorations, attracts hundreds of visitors each year who this Christmas were encouraged to contribute to Colquitt Regional Medical Center’s Hospice program. The display raised $1,100.

Mrs. May and her husband, Charles, began the tradition with just a few Christmas trees in the front yard. From there, the display grew year by year. Five years ago, the Mays decided that the lights, which drew visitors from all around the county, should do more than just brighten the spirits of those who visit, so they began encouraging visitors to make contributions to help others.

Charles May died nearly two years ago of a massive stroke and in his final days Colquitt Regional Hospice was called in to care for him. So, this year Mrs. May used the light show to raise funds for Hospice and to show her appreciation for them being there in their time of need.
