CRMC Honors Nurse of Year, G.R.E.A.T. Ambassador

Doris Kelly, RN, was named Colquitt Regional Medical Center’s Nurse of the Year and Karen Hart, RN, was selected as this year’s G.R.E.A.T. Ambassador during a week-long celebration of National Hospital Week.

Kelly, a nurse in the hospital’s wound care area, was chosen by an anonymous panel of judges from four finalists, who  included Carla Herrington, RN,  of Colquitt Regional’s diabetes education department, Tammy Murphy, RN, from the post anesthesia care unit, and Yvonne Smith, RN, a nurse on the hospital’s fourth floor. The award was presented to Kelly by last year’s Nurse of the Year, Kerri Holloway-Cox.

Hart was selected as the hospital’s G.R.E.A.T Ambassador on the basis of an inspirational essay she wrote telling why chooses to be a healthcare worker. The G.R.E.A.T. (Giving Recognition for Excellence, Advocacy and teamwork) Ambassador Award is a Georgia Hospital Association program to recognize outstanding healthcare workers who also serve as an inspiration to others to join the healthcare field.

In her essay, Hart acknowledged that changes occur on a daily basis in the medical field, but she said one aspect of nursing will never change.

“The one constant in my profession is the patient,” she wrote. “I firmly believe that the nurse is the patient’s advocate and it is their duty to make sure that every patient receives the respect and compassion they deserve and the best medical treatment available.”

She said her decision to become a nurse was an easy one.

“I believe I was called by God to be a nurse,” she wrote.

Hart will represent Colquitt Regional as one of the state’s G.R.E.A.T. Ambassadors. Last year there were 20 state ambassadors.
