D.W. Adcock Orthopedic Clinic Dedicated

The D.W. Adcock Clinic, the third new physician office to open in Moultrie in the past year, was dedicated Tuesday and named in honor of Colquitt Regional Medical Center’s medical director, long-time orthopedic surgeon and community leader.

Two new orthopedic surgeons – Dr. Robert Bartosh and Dr. Charles Davis – will practice in the D.W. Adcock Clinic, which is located at 3 Magnolia Court in Southside Medical Park adjacent to Colquitt Regional.

Jim Lowry, Colquitt Regional’s president and CEO, said the opening of the new clinic shows the hospital’s commitment to its physician recruitment program and pointed out the economic impact each new physician makes in the community.

“I want to keep emphasizing that one new physician represents 14 additional employees in the hospital or in the physician’s office. That’s a $500,000 payroll right there and doesn’t include the economic spin off,” Lowry said. “This is the third clinic we have opened this year and we will be adding 17 physicians. As a result, you will also see a major expansion of Colquitt Regional.”

Colquitt County Hospital Authority Chairman Durwood Dominy recalled Dr. Adcock’s long years of service to the community.

“D.W. brings so much to the table,” Dominy said. “He has so much to offer. Nothing could be more fitting than to dedicate this building to a true icon in the community.

“Thirty-four years ago, D.W. Adcock came to Colquitt County and since then he has made a tremendous impact in so many areas as a talented orthopedic surgeon who gave his time to his community and also gave money back to the community. His orthopedic clinic was rivaled by none. He has served as chairman of the Colquitt Regional Foundation since it began and has seen its funds increase to more than $4 million. He was founder of Serenity House and served on the Colquitt County Board of Education. And all this time he served as an orthopedic surgeon and so many other roles in the hospital.”

Dr. Adcock, who was named Colquitt County Man of the Year in 2001, said it has been a pleasure to serve people “who were not just my patients but my friends.” He said he turned down a nice offer in Louisville 34 years ago to come to Moultrie and he’s never regretted it.

“It has been wonderful to be associated with such competent doctors, capable administration, wonderful nurses and all of those in the Colquitt Regional family that have been so wonderful,” Dr. Adcock said. “When I came to Moultrie, I was the 13th physician. Now there are 60-some and soon there will be in the 70s. We have been able to recruit such good physicians. I commend our hospital for making this such a caring place. I am delighted to be associated with such an organization.” Dr. Davis, who practiced with Dr. Bartosh in Americus before the March 1 tornado that wiped out Sumter Regional Hospital also destroyed their office, said the opportunity to practice in Moultrie was a real Godsend.

“We have been welcomed and encouraged by such a fine, fine community,” Dr. Davis said. “I am impressed with how close knit the medical staff, administration and board are. I’ve been around – Arizona, California and elsewhere – I’ve been around, and what a tremendous pleasure it is to find the cohesiveness I have found here.”

Dr. Bartosh added, “The patients have accepted us. The medical staff has accepted us. D.W. Adcock set the bar high, and we will strive to keep it there.”

Dr. Hugh Ward, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, delivered the prayer of dedication for a “conventional building named for an unconventional man.”

“We thank you for his hands which have long been extended to set broken bones, help the injured to walk and cradle battered women and children,” Ward said in his prayer of dedication. “He is an example of humanity raised to its highest level. From him we have derived the strength, devotion and commitment to continue in this building the acts of grace and mercy he has begun and so now, O Lord, in his honor but to your glory we dedicate this place this day.”
