Board Certification
All nine member of the Colquitt County Hospital Authority were recognized by the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) at a recent board meeting for being one of the first hospital boards in the state to achieve100 percent trustee certification.
GHA developed the certification program to give board members a better understanding of healthcare issues, to insure compliance with a variety of governance and to improve members’ overall board participation.
Joe Parker, president of GHA, who attended the February meeting of the Hospital Authority to present the certifications, praised the board for its support and dedication over the years.
“For many, many years we have had a very good relationship with this hospital,” Parker said. “We’ve always enjoyed the support of this hospital and this board. It means a lot to GHA in what we try to accomplish when we have that kind of support, especially from the board level.”
Durwood Dominy, who is past chairman of the Authority and currently serves on the GHA board and heads its “Top 10 Committee” to move Georgia hospitals up the quality ladder, made 100 percent trustee certification one of the board’s priorities last year.
“It’s important that hospital trustees are well versed in medical care in this country and particularly in their local arena,” Dominy said. “Hospital trustees do not run the everyday operations of a hospital but are vital in setting policy and the direction the hospital will take. Staying involved in a system that is ever-changing is very important. There are so many challenges out there. I am extremely pleased our board of trustees agreed and became one of the very first in the state to become involved in trustee certification and even prouder that all are completely certified. It takes commitment, time and effort to achieve this recognition. Certified trustees in hospitals are by far the minority at this point in time.”
